How does CBD work?
CBD is a cannabinoid found in most cannabis plants. CBD from hemp is legal because hemp by definition contains less than 0.3% THC by weight, and THC is the cannabinoid that produces the high synonymous with marijuana. CBD is similar in structure and function, but it produces no psychoactive effects like THC does. Instead, it serves a quickly-growing number of therapeutic roles for those suffering with conditions ranging from arthritis to brain cancer.
What scientists have discovered, thanks to a popular demand for research on this topic, is that every mammal, including your dog, is born equipped with a fully functioning endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is a key component to our health and well being, as it regulates homeostasis in almost every system of mammalian bodies.
The ECS controls the rates of production and degradation of the chemicals that our brain and cells use as signals and messengers, called neurotransmitters. For this reason, both clinical research and anecdotal evidence concur that modulating our internal endocannabinoid system with cannabinoids like CBD can have a profound, positive effect on mood disorders like anxiety and depression, and natural occurrences like inflammation and allergies.
Can CBD really help your pet?
We know that humans have used CBD to treat hundreds of various conditions and disorders, but how can CBD help our pets? Provided that your pet is a mammal, then it has the same endocannabinoid system that you have. Furthermore, humans share at least 95% genetic similarity with all other mammals, so we are susceptible to many of the same kinds of illnesses and diseases.
Just like their human friends, dogs suffer from anxiety and inflammation and many other ailments as well. There are several different categories of ways that CBD can help your canine counterpart:
Mood and anxiety
We’ve all experienced puppy dog eyes at some point or another, but what do they tell us about the emotions that Fido is experiencing? Many dog owners know that their best friend feels pain and sadness just like we do…but they also feel fear. However, dogs don’t have a rational mind to control their fear like we do, so they end up barking at the strange mailman and those raging fireworks. Pet owners have discovered that just like CBD is able to help them in relieving their anxiety and stress and clearing the mind, it also helps their animals to relax and get a break from the gripping terror of July 4th.
Many of the most common problems that arise with pets have to do with their temperament and disposition. Often times, these seemingly-unchangeable characteristics can be reversed with some snuggles, a milk bone, and a few drops of natural CBD oil. Whether your pet deals with separation anxiety, agitation during long-distance travel, or is just generally an unhappy soul, a little CBD can make a big difference in the quality of life of your favorite furball.
Once again, just like us, dogs feel pain and inflammation, and they even suffer from age-related illnesses. Surgical recovery, environmental allergies, and even skin diseases like mange have all been the target of CBD treatment in animals. Due to the anti-inflammatory potency of CBD, coupled with its pain-relieving ability and calming effects, many with aging pets swear by the youth and vigor that CBD oil can reintroduce into the life of a dog who has been slowed down by the inevitable effects of age.
Emergent genetic dysfunction
All dogs share the wolf as their common ancestor, chihuahuas and great danes alike. Selective breeding has produced brilliant, loyal, athletic dogs that have served innumerable roles in the lives of their human masters. From German shepherds serving on a police force, to sheep dogs that herd hundreds of livestock for farmers, the canine species has been crafted into the perfect tool. Simultaneously, we created breeds like pugs, with flattened snouts that can lead to breathing problems, and chihuahuas whose hind legs are not secured into the hip joint.
For dogs with rarer, more unique troubles like these, CBD is still able to shed a little light on their darkness. It can relieve pain and inflammation that results from inefficient hip joints in chihuahuas. CBD has also shown an ability to tighten the soft and mucosal tissues that can lead to snoring and, in severe cases, infection, in dogs with shorter-than-average snouts.
There are unending possibilities of how CBD can help us and our pets, and new discoveries are made on a daily basis. If you or your pet suffer from any of these conditions, then it’s likely that CBD and phytocannabinoid oil can improve your quality of life in a drastic way.
