CBD Legal States Policy

Medical Cannabis Policy State by State: Tennessee

What is the legal status of cannabis in Tennessee?

The Volunteer State’s legislature signed HB 280 into law in 2015, providing protection for patients diagnosed with intractable and severe seizures to possess and use CBD-dominant oil that has less than 0.9% THC by weight.  No other use of medical marijuana is permitted in this state, but laws were passed in 2016 that added to HB 280 (HBs 2125 & 2144).

These new laws added cancer and other intractable diseases to the list of eligible conditions. Furthermore, CBD oil derived from Industrial Hemp is 100% legal in all 50 states, as this plant never has more than trace amounts of THC, but is generally rich in CBD and other cannabinoids.
